Heather Day- Owner

Hi, I'm Heather Day and I'm the one-woman show behind Heather Day Designs.

Starting my own clothing line was always a dream, but it wasn’t until I discovered the devastating facts behind the fashion industry that I knew my business had to be more sustainable. “Of the 100 billion garments produced each year, 92 million tonnes end up in landfills.” (https://earth.org/fast-fashions-detrimental-effect-on-the-environment/ ).  Fast fashion not only affects the consumers’ wants and needs to stay on top of trends, but also harms the environment and human rights in third-world countries. We as a capitalist country became accustomed to overconsumption and don’t think twice when we buy, donate, or toss something into the trash. I was no different at one point, but I believe I became more mindful the more I learned about these horrific facts. My hope behind Heather Day Designs is not only to create a high-quality, sustainable, slow fashion brand, but also spread light to the dark truth of fast fashion.

You might ask “what is slow fashion?”. Well, in my own words, slow fashion clothing is made mindfully with attention to detail. I start by finding the best preloved materials, like 100% cotton, denim or quilts. Personally I like to find garments that may have imperfections because I figured those are more likely to end up in landfills. After a deep clean (using my personal mixture of borax, laundry booster, and baking soda) I then repair or remove the imperfections and then create items like bags, clothes, fiber art, etc. along with using new materials. This technique has become widely known as “upcycling” or “reworked” fashion. Not only do I love to sew and sell my items, I also love to share how I create my pieces in hope to inspire others to upcycle their own wardrobe or even start their own business.
